Why Should I Store Food

Why store food?  Store food for various unforeseen or foreseen emergencies: such as, unemployment, illness or death of a primary wage earner, or some local or national disaster, and  of course the Year2000 (Y2K).

Almost everyone and for that matter everything stores food. Animals store food. Plants store food. Human beings store food. The question really is not, "Should I store food?" The real question is "How long, how much, and what kind of food should I store?"  If a survey were taken, it would probably show that most people, especially families,  store food for a minimum of 30 days or more.

Why do most of us store food for approximately thirty days? I am not sure. But I would guess that it is the result of many accumulated factors. Habit has become second nature. We tend to feel that what we are doing is what everyone has always done. However, this is definitely not true. Thirty to fifty years ago, many people probably stored some foods for as much as a year or more. Some people do not store more food because of limited space due to urban living.

During 1930 and before approximately ninety-five or more percent of the United States population lived in rural areas - on farms. Only five percent or less of our population lived in Urban areas. Even most of these Urban dwellers migrated from the rural areas. Amazingly, many people who live in the Urban areas do not even know the  real source or sources of our foods.

On the Jay Leno show August 28, 1998, Jay Leno went out on the street and asked various and sundry persons the question, "Where does food come from?" It was fascinating that almost no one gave a correct answer. In fact, it was beyond even my expectation of the ignorance of the general public as to where food comes from. Personally, I had already thought that many people were truly ignorant of the real source of food - The farm - Rural America.    Jay Leno's show only tended to confirm my suspicions.

Where do most farmers get their food and groceries - THE GROCERY STORE - Aldi's, Hy-Vee, and various other grocery stores.    At present approximately ninety-five or more percent of the United States population lives in the Urban area. Many have little or no roots to the rural area or understanding of the dynamics of food production. In fact, many, many farmers have become very, very dependent on automation, machination, and modern developments. Not very many farmers even grow gardens for themselves. How do I know? I am from a rural area and constantly observe the changes. My parents were farmers long term - sixty-five years. My son and I visit three to six times a year and I personally have a stake in farming.

Yes, everyone stores food - some a week, some a month, some three months, and some even one year. One more reason that we do not store food for a longer time is that we have become dependent of Government to bail us out when we are in difficulty - all the various forms of government relief and welfare programs. Also, we have had good, good , economic prosperity for a long, long time.

Should we prepare food because of the end of the world is coming? If the end of the world is coming can we prepare? Yes, but not with food for the body. In fact, even if the end of the world is not coming soon, the end of your world may be. Thus the question should not be about the end of the world, but about the end of  "your"  world. This is a religious and spiritual matter. And it is of primary importance - even before food, clothing, and shelter.
